Control measure

Survey adjacent areas or compartments

Control measure knowledge

In buildings under construction or demolition, there are more likely to be breaches of compartmentation or a lack of fire stopping, causing the fire to breach the compartment.

Strategic actions

Fire and rescue services should:
  • Develop tactical guidance and support arrangements for the associated hazards and the actions to take when surveying adjacent areas or compartments

Tactical actions

Incident commanders should:
  • Ensure all areas above, below and adjacent to the fire compartment are checked for potential fire spread

  • Consider using appropriate and effective firefighting media as a compartment boundary coolant
  • Look for signs of smoke, fire or gas coming from other parts of building unaffected by fire
  • Consider requesting the attendance of a local authority building inspector to provide advice on building structural integrity
