Failure to preserve and secure the scene for investigation

Hazard Knowledge

Hazard knowledge

It is important for fire and rescue services to consider the need to preserve the scene of a transport incident for investigation purposes. Other organisations may carry out their own investigations and have some involvement in the incident. This includes:

  • The police
  • British Transport Police
  • Civil Aviation Authority
  • Air Accident Investigation Branch
  • Rail Accident Investigation Branch
  • Marine Accident Investigation Branch

Due to the complex nature of many transport-related incidents it may be more difficult to ensure the security of the scene, as it may involve:

  • A widespread area due to the size and nature of the incident
  • A remote or difficult to access location
  • Large numbers of people
  • Large volumes of cargo, which could include hazardous material
