Acquisition of breathing apparatus role related competence

It is recommended that the learning outcomes in this specification are used by fire and rescue services to train and develop their personnel identified to undertake the roles described in the Foundation for Breathing Apparatus. This will promote a common approach to breathing apparatus training and support intra and interoperability and national resilience.

The use of compartment fire behaviour training can form part of an initial breathing apparatus development programme. However, the additional training content for compartment fire behaviour is set out in the training specification for Fires and Firefighting and should be used in conjunction with this training specification.

Due to the safety critical nature of breathing apparatus it is recommended that the delivery of initial breathing apparatus role related training be undertaken by competent breathing apparatus trainers/instructors.
