Control measure

Locate and avoid cables

TRAINING SPECIFICATION

Knowledge and understanding

Control measure element Learning outcome

Locate and avoid cables

Understand:

  • How thermal imaging can be used to identify internal fixings that have been subjected to heat
  • Other methods to locate and identify lightweight conduit, trunking and cable fixings
  • The need and methods to isolate electricity supplies to reduce the hazards associated with cables
  • How specialist equipment may minimise the risks associated with cable entanglement

Practical application

Control measure element Learning outcome

Locate and avoid cables

Demonstrate the ability to:

  • Establish and communicate the location of cables, fixings, fuels and relevant isolation points
  • Assess the likelihood that cables and fixings may fail
  • Use thermal imaging to identify cables subjected to heat
  • Identify and communicate alternative routes to avoid the risks associated with cables
  • Secure cables in safe position to avoid entanglement
  • Perform a controlled release of cables
  • Select the use of appropriate specialist equipment to minimise the risk of cable entanglement
