Control measure

External fire protection

TRAINING SPECIFICATION

Knowledge and understanding

Control measure element Learning outcome

External fire protection

Understand:

  • How to evaluate the likelihood and impact of external firespread, considering:
    • Building design
    • Construction materials
    • Status of the fire
    • Breaches in compartmentation, such as open windows or external wall panels
  • How external firespread may impact on:
    • Occupants of the building
    • Access, egress and evacuation routes
    • Cordon distances
    • Other parts of the building
    • Surrounding areas and adjacent buildings
  • How the presence of external cladding and sources of renewable energy may affect firefighting operations and external firespread

Practical application

Control measure element Learning outcome

External fire protection

Demonstrate the ability to:

  • Identify potential external fire spread in buildings
  • Use appropriate firefighting tactics and equipment to minimise external fire spread in buildings
  • Identify and use a buildings external fixed firefighting installations
  • Use effective communications as an internal and external firefighting crew
  • Consider the potential effects of wind on fire development in buildings
