  • The seven basic factors that will generally determine the level and type of protection required by responders at incidents involving hazardous materials
  • The information contained on emergency action codes regarding personal protective equipment
  • The information contained on additional personal protection (APP) codes and how to access it
  • The use of personal protective equipment during initial operational response (IOR)
  • The use of personal protective equipment for decontamination
  • The advantages and limitations of personal protective equipment (PPE) when used at incidents involving hazardous materials

Practical application

Control measure element Learning outcome

Provide suitable and sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE)

Demonstrate the ability to:

  • Identify using service procedures the appropriate PPE for incidents involving hazardous materials
  • Don PPE appropriate for incidents involving hazardous materials
  • Use PPE safely in accordance with service and/or manufacturer’s instructions at incidents involving hazardous materials
  • Ensure the correct level of PPE is maintained for the duration of the incident
